A child dies at a British school due to an outbreak of invading bacteria
A 6-year-old student died and another was receiving treatment in hospital, after an outbreak of invading bacteria, at a primary school in the English county of Surrey.
The death was confirmed by Claire Winslade, Health Protection Adviser to the British Health Security Agency in the southeast of the United Kingdom, according to the British news agency "BA Media" reported on Friday.
"We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of a pupil at Ashford Church of England, and our thoughts are with his family, friends and the school community."
"As a precaution, we have recommended antibiotics to students and staff in the same year groups as the infected individuals. We have advised schools to help prevent further cases and will continue to monitor the situation."
The BBC reported that the pupils were believed to be in the same school year group, while the second child was recovering in hospital.
The BBC added that the two children had contracted an invasive infection from "group B streptococcus" bacteria, also known as "Strip A", which causes scarlet fever.
