Fossil traces of one of the largest turtles in history in northern Spain
Paleontologists have found fossil remains of one of the largest turtles in history in northern Spain, 3.74 meters long and more than one ton in weight.
The researchers pointed out in an article they published in the magazine "Scientific Reports", that it is the largest turtle found in Europe and it dates back to the end of the Cretaceous period. "Before now, we could not find the remains of large turtles 1.5 meters or more in Europe," said the researchers from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. According to current ideas, the first turtles appeared at the end of the Triassic period or the beginning of the Jurassic period.
